Buildings and Carbon 2025
Event Description

This course provides an in-depth exploration of carbon emissions in the built environment, offering a foundational understanding of key concepts, strategies, and principles. Participants will examine the global carbon cycle and its relationship to the built environment, covering both operational carbon (including grid emission factors and electrification strategies), embodied carbon (including carbon storage and emission reduction strategies), and the relationship between the two. The course will also introduce the “time value” of carbon and its implications for material selection and emissions management. By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with a broader understanding of how to approach carbon reduction in their work and set meaningful climate goals.

This is the third session of the Materials Matter: Embodied Carbon & The Path to Healthier Buildings training series. Join the series to explore the connections between climate, human health, and the circular economy—transforming the way we design and build for a better future.

Learning Objectives -

1. Identify both emission reduction and carbon storage opportunities in building design and construction.
2. Critically analyze a design to develop strategies for operational and embodied carbon reduction.
3. Incorporate the time value of carbon into project decision making.
4. Analyze the co-benefits of carbon emission reduction that relate to energy efficiency, health impacts, and other social and ecological benefits.
